Building Block Themed Math and Literacy Centers for Preschoolers

Has your little one ever been SO into their playtime that you just hated to pull them away for school work? This was our struggle recently. LG was completely obsessed with her LEGOs and I couldn’t stand to stop her independent play for school work. I mean, we work so hard to get our kiddos playing on their own that it can seem almost painful to pull them away. Am I right?! Ha!

So I decided to take her favorite play activity and turn it into a school activity, leading to the creation of our new favorite Tot/Preschool unit – our Building Block Math and Literacy Centers for Preschoolers!

Your kiddos won’t even realize they’re practicing their letters with these alphabet building block cards! Students can practice building their letters on top of the cards or they can use the cards as guides for building on their own LEGO mat. Then using a dry erase marker, kiddos practice tracing the upper and lowercase letters.

Focusing on one-to-one correspondence is a great way to practice counting with little ones. Simply guide your kiddos in counting and covering the blocks with their building blocks, then use a dry erase marker to trace the numbers. We LOVE that these numbers even include writing guidance to make sure your kiddos are using the correct formation!

If your little ones are in the pre-writing stage, these tracing strips are super helpful! Kiddos can practice building the lines using building blocks as their manipulatives. Or they can use a dry erase marker to practice tracing!

Another great activity to practice with your building blocks is pattern building! Kiddos can replicate the patterns by placing the building blocks on top of the strips, or extend the pattern on their LEGO mats!
