Weather Math and Literacy Activities for 2-5 Year Olds

If you’re spending your days with little ones ages 2-5, these 15 weather Math and Literacy Activities are a perfect way to keep their little hands and brains engaged!

This unit includes a week of PRE-MADE visual plans that ready for you to print and work through! It also includes 5 weather-themed book read aloud recommendations (with YouTube links to the read aloud videos) and tips for creating your own weather-themed sensory bin!

Let’s take a look at the 5 Math, 5 Literacy, and 5 Fine Motor activities included in our weather-themed Preschool unit!

weather rain drop counting

Rain Drop Counting Cards

Grab your favorite manipulatives and practice counting with these rain drop counting cards! Kiddos practice one-to-one correspondence by counting and covering each rain drop. If your little ones are ready, follow the arrows on the numbers to practice writing them. If not, use your manipulatives to build the numbers instead!

Number Find & Cover

Find & Cover activities are an engaging way to practice number recognition! To use this activity, children choose a cloud number card. They’ll identify the number on the card, then find the matching number on the rainbow mat and cover it with a manipulative from their weather sensory bin.

weather rain drop 10 frame

Rain Drop 10 Frame

10 Frame activities are such a fun addition to our sensory bins! Simply toss the number cards into your sensory bin and use the “rain drop” manipulatives to build the amounts on the 10 Frame!

Color Sorting

Littles love sorting! And these cards are perfect to use as a sorting activity, or as color flash cards. Kiddos can walk around their learning space with their card searching for an item that matches each card. Or, lay them all out on your table so they can sort small objects by color on top of the cards!

weather cloud shape matching

Cloud Shape Matching

Complete the rainbow puzzles by matching the clouds with the same shapes!

weather letter tracing

Weather Alphabet Cards

This activity is perfect for littles who are getting started with their alphabet! While your kiddos use the manipulatives to build the letters, talk about the letter names, upper and lowercase versions, and sounds! And if they’re ready, try using a dry erase marker to practice tracing the letters!

weather alphabet board game

Alphabet Board Game

The best way to sneak in learning time is with games! This alphabet board game is a perfect way to combine letter/sound recognition with a fun game! Simply roll the dice, move to the matching letter, and continue until you reach the end!

ABC Order Mat

This activity is a great way to practice ABC order without your kiddos even realizing! While they think they’re just choosing letter matches, they’re completing an alphabetical order exercise that will stick with them forever!

Beginning Sounds Mat

Combine Science vocabulary and beginning sounds practice with this weather-themed beginning sounds matching mat! Children choose weather picture cards from their sensory bin, identify the missing beginning sound, and use the card to cover the correct letter on the mat.

Beginning Sounds Tracing

Tracing cards are another great way to include multiple skills! These cards introduce weather terms, review beginning sounds, and practice handwriting/letter formation – all in one reusable activity!

weather matching mat

Weather Sensory Bin Matching Mat

Sensory bin matching mats are a great way to introduce your littlest learners to academic goals! Littles pick sensory bin pieces from their bin and practice matching them to their matching mat!

weather play dough cards

Weather Play Dough Cards

Fine motor skills are so important to practice with our little ones! They don’t naturally have the same finger strength and coordination that we have as adults. So using materials like PlayDoh is a great way to strengthen their little muscles! These weather-themed cards are such a fun activity!

weather tracing cards

Weather Pre-Writing Strips

These pre-writing strips are SO stinking handy. Fill them with little manipulatives like mini erasers, mold play dough to fit, or use a dry erase marker to trace! *I’ve found that LG is most successful during her tracing practice when she uses “bubble” lines like these instead of just tracing “dashes”!

weather cutting practice strips

Weather Cutting Strips

Give your cutting practice a seasonal flare with these weather-themed cutting strips! Need some extra tracing practice instead? Print an extra copy, laminate them for durability, and practice tracing the lines with a dry erase marker!

Weather Play Dough Mat

Put your little learners to work using play dough to build all of the different types of weather they learned about throughout the week! Not only does this give them a great chance to show what they know, they’re also getting tons of important fine motor skills practice!
