Storm season is upon us and I love taking this time to talk all about weather with the littles! We live in an area that sees LOTS of different types of weather this time of year, so there’s always something to explore! These weather books and activities are the perfect addition to your weather themed unit!
Weather Book Recommendations
The first thing I love to do when we begin a new themed unit is grab ALL. THE. BOOKS. for that theme. And finding books for a weather theme is SO much fun! Using a Science themed Math and Literacy unit is a great way to include nonfiction texts in your reading! Check out some of our favorite weather books below! *These are Amazon affiliate links. Your kiddos will practice common early Preschool skills like shapes, colors, counting, letters, and fine motor skills.
“Cloud” Sensory Play
Do your kiddos like getting messy?! I know mine does! Anytime we want to turn school time into MESSY fun, we break out the shaving cream! This is especially fun during our weather unit when talking about clouds! LG loves playing in the shaving cream. But I love using it for pre-writing practice by asking her to trace different shapes, letters, numbers, etc. in the shaving cream! Little does she know, her messy play time is full of learning!
Weather Themed Sensory Bin
Speaking of sensory, we are HUGE fans of sensory bins in our house! This weather themed sensory bin will be the perfect addition to both your play time and learning time!
To assemble the bin I grabbed a bag of cotton balls (clouds), cut up yellow straws (lightning bolts or rays of sun), little blue gems from the dollar store (raindrops), snowflake gems, and sun/rainbow mini erasers from the Target Dollar Spot years ago!
This bin is a great resource when added to our weather themed Math and Literacy centers as you’ll have plenty of opportunities to use the manipulatives! You can also use this bin to create patterns, discuss the different types of weather, or create your own weather scenes! And don’t forget – all the various textures offer an amazing sensory experience!
Character Traits Weather Craftivity
If you’re enjoying weather themed fiction books during this unit, don’t forget to grab this handy this craftivity! Your kiddos will have so much fun prepping the cloud and raindrops, they’ll barely notice that they’re practice an important reading comprehension skill – character traits!
