Embracing the Joy of Holiday Homeschooling: 5 Simple Tips

The holidays are such a special time for families… full of cozy moments, twinkling lights, and extra time spent together. But for many homeschool families (especially those with little ones!), this season can also bring a unique challenge: how do we keep up with homeschooling while making time for all the holiday fun? Enter – holiday homeschooling!

If you’re feeling pulled between lesson plans and Christmas cookies, you’re not alone! Let’s chat about one of my favorite things – holiday homeschooling! Below I’m sharing 5 simple ways to balance homeschooling with the holidays so you can focus on what truly matters – creating meaningful memories with your children.

Learning doesn’t stop when the Christmas tree goes up! During this busy season, it’s okay to set aside your regular homeschool schedule and replace it with hands-on, holiday-themed learning. Try holiday homeschooling activities like…

  • Reading seasonal picture books together during “Basket Time.” CLICK here for our favorite Christmas books!
  • Baking cookies to practice measuring and following directions.
  • Writing Christmas cards or thank-you notes to sneak in handwriting practice.
  • Counting ornaments, sorting holiday decorations by color, or estimating how many lights are on the tree!

These real-life lessons are just as valuable as worksheets, and your kiddos will love the change of pace!

If you’re used to full homeschool days, move to a holiday homeschooling routine and consider switching to “morning-only” lessons or focusing on your core subjects (like reading and math) for a few weeks. This keeps your routine steady without overwhelming anyone.

Remember: it’s perfectly fine to pause formal studies for a bit. Learning continues through play, conversation, and time spent together as a family.

We moms love a good checklist (I know I do!), but sometimes the best way to enjoy the season is to let go of perfection. Instead of trying to do it all, pick just a few priorities for your homeschool and holiday plans. Maybe that means…

  • Choosing one special craft each week instead of daily activities.
  • Limiting outings to a few family favorites.
  • Using ready-to-go printables or sub plans to make lesson prep quick and easy.

When you plan less for your holiday homeschooling, you leave more room for you, rest, and connection.

Little ones thrive on routine — even when things get busy! Instead of packing your schedule with events, build a predictable daily rhythm that includes rest and play. For example…

  • Morning: Enjoy your usual homeschool time or a fun Christmas learning activity.
  • Afternoon: Read alouds, sensory play, or baking together.
  • Evening: Christmas movie night, hot cocoa, and snuggles on the couch.

When your family has a steady rhythm, everyone feels calmer and more connected.

At the heart of the holidays is time spent celebrating family, gratitude, and faith. It’s okay to slow down and make that your main focus for a while.

Read your favorite Bible story together, serve others as a family, or take a nature walk to talk about God’s beautiful creation. These are the lessons that matter most — and they’ll stick with your children far longer than a worksheet ever will.

Momma friend, the holiday season doesn’t have to be stressful. You don’t need a perfect plan or Pinterest-worthy crafts to make it meaningful. Your presence, peace, and love are what your children will remember most.

So light the candles, turn on the Christmas music, and give yourself permission to slow down. You’re doing an amazing job — and this season is the perfect reminder of why homeschooling is such a gift.
