Easy Daily Routine for Preschoolers Age 3-5 Years Old

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably found yourself wondering “What does a daily routine for preschoolers at home look like? What do I need in our routine?” I’ve been there—and friend, I’m here to remind you that home is the perfect place for your preschooler to learn, grow, and play. You don’t need anything fancy—just a rhythm that works for your family and makes space for both learning and loving.

Today, I’m sharing a sample daily routine for preschoolers ages 3-5, perfect for homeschool families. It’s flexible, gentle, and full of opportunities to connect while encouraging your little one’s development. Let’s dive in!

*JUST A NOTE* I’ve included time stamps in this post that fit our own family’s schedule. HOWEVER. Please note that all little ones have different natural rhythms! Our family is up later at night and sleeps in later, so our time stamps may not work for your own daily routine. My main rule of thumb? Fit these routine categories into a 12-hour window, starting when your child wakes up in the morning. Hope this helps!

Wake-Up and Snuggles: When planning a daily routine for preschoolers, I think it’s important to consider the tone you want to set for your day. We start the day nice and slow. Snuggles with cartoons, stories in bed, or chatting over breakfast are the perfect way to set a gentle tone to our day.

Breakfast + Morning Chores: Little ones can help with simple tasks like feeding pets, putting clothes in the hamper, or wiping the table—great for building responsibility early on! (PS I’ll be back soon with a blog post sharing our favorite breakfast items!)

Basket Time: We gather on the couch for a cozy routine—a devotional or Bible study, picture books that align with our current Science studies, poetry, and other seasonally themed picture books!

Literacy + Math Activities: This is one of my very favorite parts of a daily routine for preschoolers! There is just something SO special about watching our littlest learners explore and have their first “lightbulb moments”. And what a gift it is that we get to experience this alongside them!

Hands-On Learning Play: Sensory bins, dramatic play, building blocks, or art activities like play dough and painting. These aren’t just fun—they build fine motor skills and creativity, too! This is also our favorite time to get outside in the warmer months. It can be so helpful to break up our daily routine with some good sunshine and brain breaks outside!

Lunch + TV Time: By about noon, we are more than ready for a lunch break! This is also when I take my own first break of the day. I really neglected my own need for brain breaks for YEARS, and using lunch time as a chance to get a little alone time has been SO very helpful for me. I prep the girls lunch and then they get to eat it with a TV show or 2! This gives me a chance to eat my lunch alone on the patio or in my bedroom – a much needed quiet break.

Play Time or Adventure: A daily routine for preschoolers wouldn’t be complete without some adventures! Now that we have no napping babies in our house, we use afternoon as our time to get out of the house unless the girls are just having a blast playing at home. We may run a couple of errands just for the sake of changing up our scenery, or use this time for field trips. Let me tell you – places like the zoo, Science museum, etc. are MAGICAL in the afternoons. They’re so empty, sometimes we have the place nearly to ourselves!!

Even if your little one doesn’t nap anymore, quiet time in a daily routine for preschoolers is GOLD. I’ve also really underestimated how important this is for myself as a full-time stay-at-home mom. Not only was I having trouble squeezing work for The Stay-at-Home Teacher into my day, I was also running myself ragged and I’m sad to say it affected us all. Slowing down and taking the time to rest each day has been such a gift, and I’m thrilled that our lifestyle as a homeschool family has given us the chance.

TV Break: If I still need some time to finish up a work task, I do not hesitate to turn on a couple of good TV shows for the girls after Quiet Time. Usually if I turn on the TV near their play room, this gives them a good transition time between resting and exploring new activities to dive into. It’s the perfect chance for me to finish up what I’m doing so we can move on with our day!

Nature Play or Creative Time: Head back outside, explore with nature scavenger hunts, sidewalk chalk, or water play. If it’s rainy, we might do some music time, baking together, or open-ended art. One of my favorite things about planning a daily routine for preschoolers is that there are chances to learn and play ALL DAY LONG.

Finish Up Any Loose Ends: If we didn’t get to a specific activity earlier, we might do it now. Or we just lean into life skills—cleaning up, helping with dinner, or practicing manners at the table.

Dinner + Family Time: This is when we reconnect with Daddy, talk about our day, and enjoy a slow family meal. We have some fun family shows we like to watch (we can totally nerd OUT on some episodes of Good Eats, y’all) or we spend some extra time outside riding bikes or playing in the backyard!

Evening Rhythm: Bath time (although I am a HUGE fan of afternoon bath time for kiddos who just need a little something different), jammies, books, and prayer. Our goal is a peaceful and consistent wind-down time, because one of the joys in creating a daily routine for preschoolers is creating rhythms that will benefit them for years to come.
