Let’s talk about something that seems so simple yet somehow becomes one of the biggest battles of the day—kid snacks. If your little ones are like mine, you probably hear “I’m huuuuungry!” approximately 47 times a day. And while we want to make sure our kiddos are fueled for play and learning, navigating snack time without it turning into an all-day buffet can be tricky.
So today, I want to share a few simple strategies that have helped us keep kid snacks stress-free, healthy(ish), and even fun! Plus, I’ve included a list of our favorite go-to snacks to help you stock your pantry with options your kids (and you!) will love.

Create a Snack Routine
Just like we set routines for homeschool, chores, and bedtime, kid snacks routines can make a huge difference. When kiddos know when to expect snacks, they’re less likely to graze all day long.
Here’s an example of a daily snack routine, but CLICK HERE to see our daily routine in more detail!
- Mid-morning snack (around 10:00 AM)
- Afternoon snack (around 2:30 PM)
- Optional evening snack if dinner was early or light
Having these designated times helps us all stay on track and encourages kids to focus on meals instead of constantly asking for something to eat.
Tip: Use a visual schedule or a snack clock so your littles can see when snack time is coming!

Offer Choices (But Set Limits)
Toddlers and early elementary kiddos thrive when they feel a sense of independence. Instead of opening the pantry floodgates, try offering two or three options during snack time. You stay in charge, but they get to make a decision—win, win!
Example: “It’s snack time! Would you like apple slices or cheese and crackers today?”
Another option we’ve enjoyed as our kiddos are getting older is to have a kid snacks basket on the coffee bar within the girls’ reach. As a work-from-home mom, I definitely appreciate finding ways to help my girls be a little more independent during my work times.
When it’s time for a snack in the afternoon, I can tell the girls to choose 2 snacks from the basket to take with them to quiet time. Since I’ve already approved all of the snacks in this basket, there is no work for me other than reminding them to just choose two. This has been a tremendous help!

Pair Snacks with Learning or Play
Snack time doesn’t have to be a break from learning. It can be a part of your day that supports it! Of course it helps that kid snacks are generally colorful and inviting, opening up lots of opportunities to get creative with your activities!
- Practice counting with goldfish crackers.
- Talk about colors and shapes with fruit.
- Have a picnic on a blanket and read a short story during snack time. (This is one of our personal favorites!)
- Turn snack time prep into fine motor practice by having your littles pull grapes on the vine, practice cutting with a child-friendly nylon knife, set up a tea party, etc.
It’s amazing how a little creativity can turn a simple snack into an educational (and fun!) moment.
