I have to admit, I think I’ve underestimated the power of Nursery Rhymes. I’ve been working on this set of sensory bin puzzles and matching mats for a while, but didn’t feel any rush to get them finished until I saw LG’s new interest in Nursery Rhymes! As soon as I saw how engaged and excited she was about them, I knew I had to get them ready!
Recently we ordered this Fold-Out Nursery Rhymes book from Usborne Books. (You can find it here!) LG was immediately hooked!! She wanted us to read it to her over and over again before every nap and bedtime, and carried it all over the place! But y’all. Yesterday she shocked me!
My child, who’s not even 3, pulled out this book and decided she wanted to read to ME! It was the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen! The thing about Nursery Rhymes that I love so much is how catchy they are! She was quickly able to pick up on the rhythm and words, and is now pre-reading. Do you have any idea how happy that makes this teacher momma’s heart?!
The funny thing is this really shouldn’t surprise me. As a first grade teacher, I knew the importance of practicing things like Sight Words as much as possible. I knew that these words would give my kiddos the confidence and foundation they needed to be successful readers. That’s exactly what these Nursery Rhymes are to LG, and I couldn’t be more excited to watch her learn!
To accompany this book and give her a hands-on way to explore the rhymes, I created this set of sensory bins and puzzles! We’ve already had so much fun using them to retell each rhyme. Most of the Nursery Rhymes from the book are included, as well as a few others! Be on the lookout for another set, coming soon!
